Is Vintage the New Black?
In a world where most things can be bought online and delivered to your front door, why do Australians bother to visit thrift stores?
Elegance is timeless. A well-cut coat or classic black dress is a great addition to your wardrobe, even if it’s from a different era. Eclectic style is just one reason for the resurgence of thrift shopping.
For some, it is about being eco friendly and avoiding fast fashion. Then there are savvy Gen Z entrepreneurs who have seen Girlboss and are looking for bargains to resell on clothing apps like Depop. Yet others are drawn by the tantalising possibility of chancing upon hidden treasures or simply wanting to stretch their shopping dollar further.
Little wonder the Australian resale market is booming!
Valued at over $60 billion in 2022, it is slated to increase over the coming years with clothing, shoes, and accessories being the most popular second-hand items.
Signs of a Good Op Shop
Even if it has been years since you ventured into a thrift shop, here are some handy hints and tips to make the most of your next foray.
#1 Look for curated collections
Many op shops have had a facelift and are virtually indistinguishable from regular fashion outlets. These are well-lit, open and welcoming places where designer labels can lurk alongside generic brands.
To begin with, look for shops that curate their collections as you are more likely to find a second-hand gem there. From the humble Vinnies and Salvos to trendier circular fashion stores, many of them use social media to showcase their weekly ‘finds’. Pick some favourites to follow and stay in the loop.
Of course, thrift shopping requires an eagle eye since items are sold 'as found'. As well as quality control checks, make sure zips are in working order and there are no missing buttons. Sizes can also be variable, so whenever possible, try before you buy.
#2 Enjoy the eclectic mix
Have you noticed that thrift shops are clustered together in certain suburbs? The art of browsing cannot be rushed!
Plan your day, if possible during the week when fewer people are about.
Next, pick an affluent area and immerse yourself in the thrifting experience. Take a fun-loving friend along as a sounding board and inspiration to try new styles, aesthetics, and colours. Thrift shops are known for their eclectic collections, so why not try on something totally outside your ‘normal’ style?
#3 Use Reverse Google
Everyone loves a bargain but don't take the price tags for granted. Op shops are businesses too. So, if you find a preloved dress or shoes that you want, take a photo and use Google Reverse Image Search on your smartphone. Very quickly you will find out if it really is a steal!
