3 Eco-Friendly Bathroom Cleaning Hacks

Cleaner greener living doesn’t have to be a luxury. Even at a time when budgets are tight, some Australians are consciously choosing sustainable products.

Now, you also can keep your bathroom sparkling clean without spending big on high-end products. Start with these 3 cleaning hacks.

1. S-t-r-e-t-c-h your cleaning dollar further

Eco friendly living begins in the home, and one of the main ways to stretch your cleaning dollar further is by investing in wet areas such as bathrooms.

Have you ever considered replacing your conventional shower glass with a frameless shower screen? Made from tempered glass, a frameless shower screen is extremely easy to maintain. Since there are no awkward nooks and crannies that trap dirt, grime, or mould, they can be easily wiped down with a microfibre cloth.

Plus, these shower screens will give your bathroom an instantaneous ‘facelift’ and a sense of spaciousness. They can be custom fitted to your requirements and are a worthwhile investment benefitting both your home’s appeal and cleanliness.

2. Get the most bang for your buck

It’s no secret that the number of Australians who are sensitive to allergens is on the rise.  Currently, allergies affect one in five people, including a large percentage of children.

Caring for the well-being of our families has prompted many of us to seek out gentler non-toxic products for use in the homes. However, the array of cleaning products available in the supermarket is bewildering!

So, how do we separate ‘greenwashing’ from genuinely eco friendly claims? Fortunately, Choice magazine has carried out expert testing on a range of cleaning products and made some interesting discoveries - for example, multi-purpose cleaners and most kitchen sprays have a similar level of effectiveness!

This means you can invest in just one quality multi-purpose cleaner for surface cleaning rather than stocking your cupboard full of cleaning sprays for different areas of the home. Not only will you achieve the same sparkling results for less money, but purchasing fewer products reduces your environmental footprint.

Researchers also dished the dirt on floor cleaners: the regular products tested simply did not deliver the goods. Plain hot water was the best floor cleaner hands down!

3. How practical are DIY Cleaners?

If you are keen to try your hand at environmentally-friendly DIY home cleaners, stock up on 3 common ingredients that are marvellous cleaning agents and cheap to boot. These are:

  •          white vinegar;

  •          bicarbonate of soda;

  •          and eucalyptus oil.

Old-fashioned white vinegar remains one of the best ways to clean glass windows and mirrors, while bicarb of soda (also known as baking soda) is like the Swiss army knife of cleaning agents! It can be used to spot clean stains on carpets, scrub countertops, deodorise pet litter trays, reduce odours in the fridge, and deter germs and mould. There are some exceptions, however, such as aluminum and glass where baking soda can be too abrasive, so use it wisely.

Thirdly, eucalyptus oil is a great alternative to highly scented fabric softeners. Simply sprinkle a few drops in the rinse cycle and enjoy the fresh smell of your laundry. Plus it has significant antimicrobial properties!

We hope we’ve convinced you that a spic and span home doesn’t have to cost the earth either literally or figuratively. By incorporating these cleaning hacks, you can save money, reduce your environmental impact, and enjoy a sparkling and healthier home.
