It’s not just about money

Last December, with Christmas just days away, my thoughts turned to the topic of giving.

In particular, I was pondering the verse  “God loves a cheerful giver”. It can be found in 2 Corinthians 9:7 … Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Usually we think of this Scripture in relation to giving money, but God was whispering to me about giving cheerfully of our time and energy to His service and for His glory.

How do you give of your time and energy for God? For me, it’s editing and producing Footprints magazine. I am definitely a cheerful giver because I LOVE doing this!

My hubby on the other hand, was part of the sound team at our church for many, many years – and was heartily sick of it. Definitely NOT a cheerful giver! At the time I was impressed with this Scripture, he had just resigned from the team. I knew “it” was for Lawrence,  but I didn’t end up telling him as it no longer seemed relevant.

Lo and behold, only a day or two later he was asked to do the sound for our church Christmas production! He knew in his heart that he had to say no (never an easy thing to do), so it was wonderful to be able to encourage him by sharing the Word I had received for him. It was a timely reminder that if he wasn’t doing this service to God cheerfully, then he had no business doing it!

What about you? Are you a cheerful giver, sharing generously of your money, your time, your gifts, your talents, your worldly goods? Dare I say that you could be doing more harm than good if you are giving begrudingly?!

If God wants you to do or give something, I’m sure that He is more than capable of giving you the passion AND the desire to do it!

Can I hear an AMEN?!
