One of the articles in the Spring issue of Footprints has been niggling at me … it’s c
alled “What’s Your Poison? A woman’s guide to addiction”. It’s a fantastic piece by our very own resident psychologist and Footprints Team member, Vivian Jarrett, but it’s gotten under my skin!
The article liss 5 telltale signs or clues that may indicate a possible addiction:
- Do you start avoiding normal routines or work
commitments to engage in the activity?
- Do you feel stressed or panicky if you can’t access the
habit?
- Do you get annoyed at others for mentioning the
habit?
- Have you started planning to increase a habit that you
know has side effects?
- Have you started hiding your habit from others?
So what is the addiction that has surfaced in my life (shock, horror!)? Could it be drugs? Alcohol? Gambling? or worse?
“Hi, my name is Janet, and I am addicted to Facebook” – well actually one particular game on Facebook, called “Scramble”!
I have tried to rationalise my addiction – “It’s harmless”, “It is good for my brain!”, “It builds my vocabulary” blah blah blah. The reality however is that it’s an amazing time-waster (especially when I am procrastinating from working on Footprints!) and steals me from my family.
But try as I might I find myself playing it again and again … yep, addiction here I come … until today!
Last night I treated myself to a set of fake nails, only to find it’s slowed my typing right down, adversely affecting my scores in Scramble – voila, addiction broken LOL!!!
Vanity achieved what all the best intentions in the world couldn’t!
Seriously though, if you are interested in reading the “Addiction” article or checking out Footprints, send me an email at editor@footprintsaustralia.com for your free first issue.
I have a facebook scramble addiction. I play for several hours a day. Too bad I don’t work because I can’t get away!! Find me under ‘kimba en’. I’m usually found in the singles room…but sometimes I travel between rooms. It’s pretty dreadful cos I’m making time to play it…anyway, I rock at it ![]()
If you’re interested in challenging me…just let me know. Addicts unite :/

Hi Kim and Paula,
I generally hang out in the Libary 4×4 when playing Scramble; however I am “fasting” from it at the moment and spending more time with the family, catching up on writing, and Footprints stuff (it helps that I’ve been away on hols and haven’t been near the computer for over 2 weeks!). I’m almost scared to play again now I’m back, as I might get sucked into that old addiction again … and my family was protesting!!!!
Blessings, Janet.

I don’t think you should start playing again then. It’s for the best. Ah well. Good luck!!!!

Ahh…well I know the perils of Scramble… (I, too, haunt the library)

I love it! I was reading intently, answering yes to all the questions, thinking that I’m going to sound silly because my addiction is to the internet, and low and behold, you name one of the pages that keeps me addicted, hehe! I’m glad to read that I am not the only one addicted to something in cyberspace! In Him, Paula
